How To Fight Vendrick in Dark Souls II
Vendrick is one of the most memorable optional bosses in Dark Souls II. The fight tests a player’s timing, stamina management, and understanding of the game’s combat mechanics. Below is a step‑by‑step guide that covers preparation, arena tactics, and post‑fight tips for players who want to conquer this ancient king.
Understanding the Arena
The Vendrick arena is located in the Undead Crypt, accessed after defeating the Giant Lord and unlocking the door to the throne room. The space is relatively open, giving you room to dodge, but the stone pillars can also be used to block Vendrick’s sweeping attacks. Knowing the layout helps you stay on the safe side of his long reach.
Preparation Before the Battle
- Upgrade Your Weapon: At least +5 is recommended. A weapon with good poise damage (e.g., a large straight sword or a greataxe) can stagger Vendrick, opening opportunities for critical hits.
- Equip Light Armor: Mobility is crucial. A light or medium set keeps your roll animation under 0.6 seconds, allowing you to dodge his heavy swings.
- Use the Ashen Mist Heart: If you have the Ashen Mist Heart (found at 0:42 in the “Ashen Mist Heart” chapter), equip it to increase your stamina regeneration, which is vital for repeated dodges.
- Choose the Right Shield: A 100% physical block shield (e.g., the Kite Shield) can absorb his straight attacks, but you must be ready to roll when he uses a wide, sweeping motion.
- Buffs and Consumables: Apply a weapon buff such as Magic Weapon or Fire Grease. A few Estus Flasks and a Green Blossom for stamina boost are also recommended.
Phase One – The First 200 HP
Vendrick begins the fight with a series of slow, telegraphed swings. Follow these steps to establish control:
- Start the fight by rolling to his left side as soon as he raises his weapon. This dodge avoids his initial overhead slash.
- After the first swing, close the distance and land a single heavy attack. Vendrick’s poise is low at the start, so a heavy hit can stagger him.
- If he recovers quickly, retreat and block his next attack with your shield. This buys time for your stamina to refill.
- Repeat the roll‑attack‑block cycle until his health drops to around 150 HP. At this point, he will begin to use a faster combo.
Phase Two – The Last 150 HP
When Vendrick’s health falls below 150, his attack pattern changes. He introduces a rapid thrust combo and a new sweeping move that can hit from the side.
