How To Make Obsidian In Minecraft (Version 1.21)
Obsidian is one of the toughest blocks in Minecraft, essential for building nether portals, enchanting tables, and blast‑proof structures. In this tutorial I will show you how to create obsidian in Minecraft 1.21, step by step, so you can gather it quickly and safely.
Materials You’ll Need
Before you start, collect the following items:
- Diamond pickaxe (or netherite pickaxe) – the only tool that can mine obsidian without destroying it.
- Bucket of water – to turn lava into obsidian.
- Bucket of lava – the source block that becomes obsidian when contacted by water.
- Blocks of any type – for building a safe workspace and protecting yourself from lava burns.
- Optional: Flint and steel – to create a controlled lava source if you don’t have one naturally.
Step‑By‑Step Guide
- Find or create a lava source.
Search caves, the nether, or dig a shallow pit in the Overworld. If you need a fresh source, place a bucket of lava on the ground.
- Secure the area.
Place solid blocks around the lava to prevent accidental spills. This also protects you from the damage that lava can cause.
- Place the water bucket.
Stand one block away from the lava source and right‑click with a bucket of water. The water will flow onto the lava, turning the top layer into obsidian.
- Harvest the obsidian.
Equip your diamond or netherite pickaxe and mine the newly formed obsidian block. It takes nine seconds to break, but the block will drop itself intact if you use the correct tool.
- Collect the block.
Pick up the obsidian and store it in your inventory. Repeat the process until you have the desired amount.
How Can You Speed Up the Process?
While the basic method is simple, there are a few tricks to make obsidian farming more efficient:
- Use a dispenser. Set up a dispenser with a water bucket to automatically pour water onto lava, reducing manual effort.
- Build a “lava pool” chamber. Create a 2 × 2 or 3 × 3 area filled with lava, then flood it with water. This yields multiple obs
